Since the founding of Tongue & Groove in 2006 the ensemble has accomplished many of the goals I envisioned: We’ve developed and continue to hone our signature style of serio-comic realism-based improv. The ensemble has grown seamlessly connected (as our name implies) and we’ve developed great comfort in our physical and emotional work with each other. After the first 9 months of solely directing the company (just the right time to give birth), I joined as a performer and, with the support of this wonderful ensemble, I’m juggling the task of directing, producing and acting. We developed an original format called ‘In Bed’ which we performed with great success for the first year. And this year we created another new format, ‘Secrets,’ which reflects a big goal of mine: creating more points of connection with the audience; throughout the format we randomly choose at least 15 anonymously-written true secrets from the audience to inspire our work. Also during these past two years Beth had a baby, Josh and Eoin got married (not to each other) and Adam got his own tv show. And lots of other stuff happened to us, too. And we use it all in our work. Our personal lives inform our artistic lives, and now, with our new format, our audience’s lives inform our art. And that’s exactly what I’ve wanted to create all along: a communal artistic experience with high integrity, intimacy, laughter, surprises and heart. We’re still young and developing… stay tuned for lots more growth.

Frederick Andersen most recently wrote, produced and directed "Hermitage: The Strange Story of the Ghost Men of Harlam" for Philly Fringe 2009. He also recently appeared in the Arden Theater Company’s production of “Our Town”. Prior to that he understudied at the Arden (Sondheim’s “Assassins”) and the Walnut Street Theater (Arthur Miller’s “The Price”). Locally he’s been seen at Society Hill Playhouse in “A Tuna Christmas” and the American premier of “Crackpot”; with Living Arts Repertory in “Plaza Suite”; and with the Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian Theater Festival productions of “Theater District” and “The Boys in the Band”. Other regional credits include roles in “Scapino” and “Rumors” (Best Actor Award) at LA’s Pierson Playhouse. His one-man show, “The Best of Everything” premiered at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and was then produced at the Walnut Street Theater Studio 5 as well as the Dublin, Ireland Fringe Festival.

Beth Dougherty has been doing improv on and off since her summer youth theater days in Kansas, and spent time performing with former Philadelphia groups Polywumpus and 13 Skirts. During the day she is a lawyer with Laura Solomon, Esq. & Associates, helping non-profit organizations do what they do, and at night, she hangs out with her husband Kevin (she married her improv teacher) and their son Matthew. She doesn’t get out much anymore, and is always looking for good babysitters.

Adam Gertler (not performing) Adam’s dual careers in the food industry and the acting world finally came together when he became a finalist on the reality tv show The Next Food Network Star.  Despite coming in second place, the producers recognized Adam’s great ability to improvise  while playing with food, and offered him his own show called Will Work For Food, which he is currently shooting to  debut in September. Adam hopes to return for future Tongue & Groove gigs. He loved helping forge this new company with his fellow improvisers and under the leadership of Bobbi Block, whom he would follow to the improvisational depths of hell and back.

Jenn MacMillan is a graduate of The University of the Arts, where she earned her BFA degree in acting. Recent directorial credits include The Importance of Being Earnest and Naked Will (PGLTF at the Walnut) and Make Me Laugh... (The University of the Arts). Her A.D. credits include The Man From Nebraska (at the People’s Light and Theater Company). Upcoming directorial projects include the world premier of Ballad Boys for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Jenn has taught audition techniques and improv for the UArts

Eoin O'Shea Tongue & Groove makes Eoin giddy and he is honored to work with these incredibly talented performers. He has been performing since he discovered that when you pretend on stage, people thank you for it. He also found that, however, while at home, you get sent to your room. Eoin appeared last summer in a show with Philadelphia Theatre Company and The Second City at The Suzanne Roberts Theater titled The City of Nutterly Love. He is currently on a cruise ship performing weekly with Second City! Eoin also performs regularly with ComedySportz (comedysportzphilly.com). Eoin would like to thank his beautiful Wife for her unwavering belief and love, and his perfect Daughter for the inspiration. Thanks for supporting live arts.

Josh Rubinstein, Josh’s theatrical debut was at the age of six when he played The Reporter in new play written and directed by one of the neighborhood kids down the street. His performance dazzled and shocked the audience when he broke the “fourth wall” by leaving the stage during the only performance to buy some cookies at the impromptu concession stand. “I was hungry” he proclaimed in his own defense. Progressing through high school, college, and beyond Josh has performed in dozens and dozens of plays and improv groups (including one that he formed and directed in 1991 at the University of Michigan). After moving to Philadelphia, Josh began to receive real improv training with Philadelphia’s ComedySportz, with which he has been performing since 2001. For his day job, Josh writes reports and attends meetings.

Jordan Stalsworth, a graduate of The University of the Arts, has taken almost 15 years to rack up credits on stage, in film, and in handstand contests.  Jordan has recently become the Artistic Director of Philly theater company Uncut Productions. Jordan is thrilled to be working with such a talented, dedicated group of people. Enjoy our show!  If you don't, I'll bite ya.

Carrie Spaulding hails from New Hampshire, where she taught improvisation and acting at the American Stage Festival for several years. There, she founded and directed Organized Chaos, a teenage improv group. Carrie is a graduate of Brandeis University, where she was a member of False Advertising, a group that performed a combination of shortform and longform improv. After two years of leaving no children behind in the Arizona desert, she moved to Philadelphia, where she enjoys teaching third grade and fantasizes about running into John Adams and Ben Franklin on the street. Acting credits include Baby with the Bathwater (Helen), Into the Woods (The Baker's Wife), and The Sound of Music (Maria). Carrie serves a mean cup of tea, and she can teach you basic physics concepts using nothing but Legos.

Bobbi Block (Producing Artistic Director and Founder) performs with Barrymore Award Recipient ComedySportz, where she was co-producer and education director for fifteen years and artistic director for two. In addition, Bobbi performed longform improv with LunchLady Doris for twelve years and with the interdisciplinary improv group Playback Philadelphia for four years. For the 2007 Philly Live Arts Festival, she conceived and directed LEAP: The Actors’ Improv Experiment, in which she trained veteran, award-winning scripted actors in the art of improv. Bobbi is the recipient of the 2008 City Paper Award “Actress Who will Lead Improv to the Promised Land.”
Bobbi studied with master improvisers at renowned theatre centers such as The Second City, ImprovOlympic, the Annoyance Theatre, Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, and the New Actors Workshop. Bobbi has a master’s degree in theatre, teaches Improvisation at Temple University and Drexel University, and has taught improv at The University of the Arts, University of Pennsylvania, Villanova University, Bucks County Community College, the Wilma Theater, the Walnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia Young Playwrights, ComedySportz, Philly Improv Theater (PHIT), and in private classes.
